Mrs. Nietes-Satapornvanit wins International PAL Competition
Mrs. Arlene Nietes-Satapornvanit (right), Senior Project Researcher, Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management, SERD recently won awards from the International Participatory Action Learning (PAL) Competition held in Bangkok.
Mrs. Sataporvanit's PAL session entry, 'The importance of correct stocking density', won first prize for the small-scale pond aquaculture theme and her two other entries, 'Nursing small fish fry' (small-scale pond aquaculture theme) and 'Why keep records?' (monitoring and extension theme) won highly commended prizes. Her entries were adjudged by a panel of six members coming from the Support to Freshwater Aquaculture (SUFA) Program, Vietnam (funded by Danida and the Gov't of Vietnam) and the Development of Sustainable Aquaculture Project (DSAP), Bangladesh (Funded by USAID and implemented by Worldfish Centre).
The Prize winning entries together with PAL sessions developed by SUFA will be included in the Participatory Action Learning manual on small-scale aquaculture (for both ponds and rice fish systems) which SUFA and DSAP will jointly publish in English, Vietnamese and Bengali. Mrs. Satapornvanit hails from Antique, Philippines. She graduated from AFE-Aqua Batch 1990 and is currently working at the SIDA-funded Aquaculture Outreach Project in AIT. She is also assisting in the Aquaculture Compendium project of CAB International, UK, also based at AIT. She has worked as an extension officer with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in the Philippines and a technical trainer with the Training and Consultancy Unit of AARM for several years, gaining experience in experiential learning methods and participatory action learning styles.
The award was handed by Mr. Don Griffiths, Danida Advisor for SUFA.
