Nigerian minister of environment here to study mangroves

AIT Extension is running a seminar and study visit program on mangrove management in Thailand for a senior group of Nigerian visitors from the University of Calabar in Nigeria.

In Thailand from 1 to 9 September 2006, the delegation is led by the Honorable Federal Minister of Environment, Chief Helen Esuene (above, seated third from left). Other delegates are: Mr. Henry Etuk, special assistant to the Hon Federal Minister of Environment, Abuja; Mr. Omar Maiwada Mohammed, Ministry of Environment, Abuja; Prof. Sieghard Holzeloehner, leader of Mangrove-NIPA Research Team, Institute of Oceanography, University of Calabar; Dr. Francis M. Nwosu, scientist, Mangrove-NIPA Research Team, Institute of Oceanography, University of Calabar.

The delegation is visiting the Mangrove Research Center, Nypa Plantation and Community and the study sites of Coastal Habitat and Resources Management Project in Ranong Province. Their main objective is to learn mangrove management and control of Nypa palm with an emphasis on livelihoods for locals from mangrove resources utilizations. Important aspects of the trip are also to study the socio-economic and socio-cultural conditions for management and utilization of Nypa and restoration of mangrove species.
