American lectures on coastal sustainable development

One of the greatest human migrations is taking place in unprecedented rate today- from the inland to coastal. While 20 percent of the world population has already made this migration, 50 percent of the world population will be living in the coastal region within the next 15 years. Sustainable development of coastal area is one of the greatest challenges today. Prof. Stephen Olsen, director of Coastal Resources Center, University of Rhode Island, U.S.A., will tell what are the challenges at AIT in his lecture on 'Milestones In the Evolution of Integrated Coastal Management: the Theory and the Practice.' The lecture will be held on Tuesday, 24 October 2006 from 11 a.m. to12 p.m. at the Milton Bender Auditorium.

Prof. Olsen has been associated with Coastal Resources Center since its creation in 1971 and has served as its director since 1975. From 1985 to 2003, he was the international director of the Coastal Resources Management Program sponsored by the U.S. Agency for International Development. That program is widely recognized as a pioneer in developing a learning-based, issue-driven approach to the management of coastal ecosystems through long-term programs in Latin America, East Africa and Southeast Asia.

Prof. Olsen is an internationally recognized advocate of Integrated Coastal Management from the University of Rhode Island. He is the director of the Coastal Resources Center, U.S.A. – AIT's main partner in the USAID funded Post-Tsunami Sustainable Livelihoods Program.
