Kazakhstan is positioning Astana as the scientific, educational and cultural centre of Eurasia. The government aims to establish New University of Astana as a world-class university by engaging with the best local and foreign intellectual, scientific, technical and
engineering talent. The university, which covers about 123,000 square meters and is 60% completed, will open in July 2010.
About 50 people from Central Asia have completed graduate degrees at AIT. Now the Institute is engaging countries in the region to promote higher education in science and technology for sustainable development. The project of the Ministry of Education and
Science of Kazakhstan is interested to tap AIT’s fifty-year experience through various areas of cooperation.
President Said Irandoust led the mission from 11-15 November which included stops in Astana and Almaty. The delegation included Dr. Nitin Afzulpurkar, Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology; Dr. Oleg Shipin, representative of the School of Environment, Resources and Development; Dr. Pritam K. AIT enjoys a robust relationship with Central Asia through the AIT and United Nations Environment Program-Regional Resource Centre for Asia and the Pacific (UNEP RRC.AP) cooperation, which supports the delivery of a number of projects in the region. Initiatives include support to development and implementation of the Regional Environmental Action Plan (REAP), integrated environmental assessments (IEA) at national level, national and sub-regional strategies for sustainable development (NSDS and SSDS), draft of the Central Asian Environmental Convention, and new initiatives in 2009 to support climate change adaptation and mitigation initiatives. The cooperation also provides for a master’s course at AIT and internships for Central Asian junior professionals at the joint Regional Center for Asia and the Pacific supported by UNEP, which this year is marking 20 years of cooperation with AIT.
