Gorbert.Noting the unique value of the ‘Surplus Scholarships’, which allow
bright young scholars from CLMV countries to pursues their master’s
degree studies close to home, the ambassador stressed Germany’s
commitment to strengthening national and institutional capacity of
participating countries in the region.
“With these Surplus Scholarships you become a part of the family of
German alumni,” said Ambassador Schulze, as he welcomed the students
and asked them to maintain close contact with Germany throughout their
professional lives.
Mr. Gorbert echoed the ambassador, saying DAAD believed in the young
scholars’ expertise and the impact each would eventually make in their
home countries. The certificate recipients included eight students from
Cambodia, one from Lao PDR, ten from Myanmar and ten from Vietnam. Of
the 29 DAAD scholars, seventeen are female and twelve are male.
The delegation was led to the embassy by AIT Vice President for
Academic Affairs Prof. S. Kumar, who offered his thanks to Germany of
behalf of the Institute. Dr. Tenzin Rabgyal Nyima-tsang, Coordinator of
the Admissions and Scholarships Office, arranged the visit.
The Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) is the German
national agency for the support of international academic cooperation.
It offers programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and
others in higher education, providing financial support to thousands of
individuals each year.
Since 2007, AIT has partnered with DAAD to host 63 scholarship
awardees from qualified nationals of CLMV countries. For information on
