Prof. Hornyak worked in the aerospace industry as a senior scientist from 1978 to 1990 in San Diego at the Convair Division of General Dynamics in coatings, adhesives, and corrosion. From 1997 to 2002, he worked at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on development of chemical vapor deposition synthesis of carbon nanotubes.

With close to half of humanity living in urban areas, urban flooding assumes greater significance, particularly given the expansion and densification of cities.
