“AIT is very interested to establish a physical presence in Thailand’s Nakhon Nayok province,” AIT President Said Irandoust announced at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony on 26 June 2012 at AIT.

The Asian Institute of Technology has partnered with the Province of Nakhon Nayok to support its bid to become Thailand’s first “smart province” and intelligent community prototype for the fast-emerging ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.

Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) had a surprise visitor on June 26 2012 when a carpet dealer from Bangkok arrived to donate carpets for the Muslim prayer room. Mr. Suhail Kausar, overseas manager of Al-Mubeen Carpets donated carpets and prayer mats for the prayer room, and promised to return again with more.

Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) has tied up with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) to facilitate student and faculty mobility, and initiate joint academic and research programs. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate these activities was signed on 25 June 2012 by Director, IICPT, Dr. K. Alagusundaram, and the AIT President, Prof. Said Irandoust.

A book titled “Mainstreaming Human Security: Asian Perspectives” edited by a team including Dr. Philippe Doneys of the Gender and Development Studies (GDS) field of study at AIT’s School of Environment Resources and Development (SERD) has been released.

Global Islamic banking assets are set to reach 1 trillion USD in the year 2012. Although this remains a small proportion of global banking, there are positive developments in Islamic finance in countries like the United Kingdom, France, Germany and France. This was stated by Dr. Mohammad Akram Laldin of the International Shari’ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA), Malaysia, while delivering a talk on ‘The value proposition of Islamic finance and the misconception about it’ on 21 June 2012 at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT).

National Institute of Technology (NIT), Sikkim, India, wishes to engage with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and wants to partner in student exchange, faculty exchange, besides joint and dual degree programs. This sentiment was expressed by Prof. Arun Samaddar, Director, NIT during a visit to the AIT on 19 June 2012.

Dr. Mokbul Morshed Ahmad, Associate Professor in AIT’s School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) has contributed a book chapter titled “Roots of Funding, Roots of Trust: The Struggle for Survival and credibility among the Religious NGOs in Bangladesh” in the forthcoming book “Financial Cooperatives and Local Development.”
