Regional Workshop on Understanding the Agricultural Transition in Asia

A one day Regional Workshop will be held on 23 April 2010 at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). The workshop is being organized by AIT’s School of Environment Resources and Development (SERD). Venue : AIT Conference Center Timing : 9.00 -17.00 hours Background Small holdings in agriculture in Asia are facing new challenges as a result of the pressure being exerted by several driving forces including climatic variability, rural-urban migration, aging population and technological innovations.

Five AIT students volunteer for TSF roster

Students from National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) visited the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and returned impressed with the wide range of offerings at the institute. A delegation from NTUA headed by Dr. Theopisti Lyuperopoulou and comprising of 40 students were eager to learn more about the interdisciplinary and professional programs during their campus visit of AIT.

TSF training for AIT volunteers

AIT hosts TSF's Regional base for Asia & the Pacific since 2004 and AIT students have been deployed on many occasions (most lately in the Philippines to respond to Typhoons Ketsana and Parma).The selection procedure for this volunteer programme and training will be the following:- Candidates need to send their application (CV + cover letter) to asia@tsfi.

AIT Mathivation Center organizes training seminar at Cambodia

131 teachers and students from eight provinces in Cambodia participated in a “Training Seminar on Educational and Entrepreneurship Resourcefulness,” organized by the AIT Mathivation Center at the Khemarak University in Phnom Penh. This seminar follows a request by Dr. Chan Roath, President of the Cambodian Mathematical Society and Director of the Scientific Research Department at the Cambodian Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

Laureate shifts Asian base to Kuala Lumpur

Laureate Education Inc has shifted its Asian regional base from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur. At the launch of Regional Office of Laureate Education Asia Limited, Education Minister of Malaysia H.E. Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin described the move as a signal that Malaysian education sector was moving in the right direction. “Through the National Higher Education Strategic Plan, we are paving the way towards a holistic transformation of our higher education environment, not only to be world class in nature, but also be the best in the region,” the Minister remarked.

AIT organizes workshop on sustainable land management

South Asian region has the largest concentration of the poor not only in the Asia-Pacific but also in the entire world. A critical aspect is sustainable land management and improved agricultural practices. Land degradation causes loss of ecosystem function and resilience and consequently environmental disasters. The issue of land degradation assumes greater importance and complexity in the wake of climate variability and change.
