DUMBO demonstration simulates real disaster
The demonstration presented a simulated disaster scenario which caused significant damages and disrupted traditional telecommunication services like fixed/mobile phone networks and local Internet access. Emergency workers quickly installed satellite Internet access and established mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) in the affected areas to enable broadband multimedia communications.

Alumnus wins international award
Mr. Shahram Navaee-Ardeh, a recent master's graduate from the School of Environment, Resources and Development's Pulp and Paper Technology field of study has received word that he has won the C. Howard Smith Award from the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC). He will receive the award at the PAPTAC conference in February 2007.

The C. Howard Smith Award was founded in 1939 by the late Mr. Harold Crabtree, a past president of the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association (CPPA). It commemorates the late C. Howard Smith, who was a past-president of CPPA. The awards is presented to a Canadian student member or member under age 33, employed in the Canadian pulp and paper industry, who submits the paper judged best in the annual competition.

The University Support to Environmental Planning and Management project (USEPAM – http://www.usepam.ait.ac.th)
at Regional and Rural Development Program, School of Environment, Resources and Development will organize a regional conference on 'Environmental Planning and Management in Southeast Asian Countries' in Hanoi, Vietnam, during 6-8 March 2007.

The specific objectives of the conference are: 1) to facilitate the exchange of experiences gained in and lessons learned from regionally coordinated capacity building projects implemented for strengthening multidisciplinary curricula, outreach activities and applied research capacity in the area of environmental planning and management amongst academicians, policymakers, planners and international development agencies in the region who are carrying out same or similar projects; 2) to provide a forum to researchers as well as planners and policymakers for presenting results of and methodological experiences in research projects; for sharing lessons learned through implementation of environmental management policies; for discussing the policy implications of the findings of the research projects; and for seeking policy oriented research issues.
