How internet helps grow vegetables in your apartment: Innovation by IoT Students

 February 24, 2022 -- Just because you are living in a small apartment in the city does not mean you cannot grow your own vegetables. With an Internet of Things (IoT) system developed by Tanka Nath Sharma and Lalaine Jean Ballais, master’s students from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and recipients of ADB-JSP scholarship, growing your own tomatoes can be as easy as browsing TikTok clips on your mobile phone.

Since January of 2020, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has spread across the world.  The situation in Thailand was very stable in the summer of 2020--with a minor outbreak in December of that year—and all the way through the early part of 2021.  Unfortunately, a fierce wave hit Thailand in April, 2021, and then  the new Omicron variant hit us in December 2021.  Meanwhile, many places around the world are still heavily affected.

Second recipient of Dr. Subin Pinkayan Student Exchange Scholarship Program

Ms. Yukta Amatya, a Nepali MBA student in the School of Management, is the second recipient of the Dr. Subin Pinkayan Student Exchange Scholarship. The scholarship will help cover her expenses during the exchange program to the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) Seoul, South Korea from 28 February 2022 to 17 June 2022.

AIT President Dr. Eden Woon stated that these Scholarship Exchanges are an integral part of the Experiential Education initiative of Transforming AIT and provide our Master’s students an opportunity to broaden their international exposure, which would further develop their mindset to become responsible citizens of the world.

H.E. Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Thailand visits AIT

H.E. Mrs. C.A. Chaminda I. Colonne, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Thailand and AIT Board of Trustee, paid a courtesy visit to the Asian Institute of Technology on 15 February 2022. Her Excellency met with Dr. Tongchat Hongladaromp, Chairman Board of Trustees and President Dr. Eden Woon to discuss the program of cooperation that AIT is trying to establish with the Ministries and Universities in Sri Lanka with the support of the Ambassador in her capacity as member of the AIT Board of Trustees.

AIT Alumnus Supports the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

Mr. Ng Sze Tat, AIT alumnus who graduated with a Masters in Geotechnical and Transportation Engineering in 1988 and is CEO of China Communications Construction Company (Singapore Branch) has agreed to support AIT in the amount of THB 50,000 towards the Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory for student research.

AIT Alumnus Supports Master Scholarship to Myanmar Student

Mr. Harry Kasuma Aliwarga (Kiwi Aliwarga), AIT alumnus who graduated with a Masters in Structural Engineering in 1995 and is CEO, UMG Group of Companies has agreed to support 24 credits and 4 semester’s registration fees Master scholarship to a Myanmar student enrolled in one of the selected programs in any of the AIT three schools for the August 2022 intake.
