A new flagship international leadership and innovation camp aimed at creating global leaders has been launched by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). Focused on young students who exhibit leadership potential, the two-week long program seeks to emerge as a premier leadership camp for promising students from all over the world.
US President Barack Obama has named AIT alumnus, and member of the Institute Level Advisory Board (ILAB), Dr. Tissa Illangasekare, as member of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board (NWTRB). He is among the 11 experts named by President Obama on 6 January 2017 for key administration positions.
AIT’s international character was at display on the occasion of the Orientation Day organized at the Institute on 6 January 2017, when 197 students hailing from 23 countries enrolled for pursuing studies at Asia’s premier institute of higher education.
The lush grounds of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) were host to Women’s Asia Cup Twenty20 tournament played from 25 November-4 December 2016, making history in the cricketing world. The final match between India and Pakistan was telecast live, and Thailand became the first country to live telecast a game of Women’s Asia Cup.
AIT alumni continued their contributions towards the development and welfare of the Institute with the AIT Alumni Association (Thailand) organizing a mega CSR event in December, and two individual alumni making individual and group donations.

Eastern University, Sri Lanka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) for furthering academic collaboration. The MoU was signed by the Vice Chancellor of Eastern University, Dr. Thangamuthu Jayasingam, and the AIT President, Prof. Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai on 8 December 2016.
It is graduates that are a true measure of the quality of a university rather than ranking systems. Addressing graduands on the occasion of the 126th graduation of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on 15 December 2016, Prof. David Carmichael stated that while ranking systems provide for good measurements, they are not suitable while comparing universities. It is the students that are a true reflection of the quality of a university, he said in his graduation address.
