Visit of H.E. Dr. Leonel Fernandez, President of the Dominican Republic to AIT and Thailand's Science Park

Prof. Jean-Louis Armand, AIT President, joined H.E. Dr. Arthit Ourairat, Minister of Science, Technology and Environment, and Prof. Pairash Thajchayapong, Director of the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), in welcoming H.E. Dr. Leonel Fernandez, President of the Dominican Republic, and his party of 68, including ministers, government officials, members of the business community and the media to AIT and Thailand's Science Park, on Saturday, 19 February 2000.

The Dominican Republic President expressed interest in visiting AIT and the 200-rai Science Park in connection with the establishment of the Cyber Park of Santo Domingo in his country.

AIM (Asian Institute of Management) and Carl-Duisberg-Gesellschaft (CDG) Scholarship for 20 Women from Southeast Asia

Program to take place in the Philippines and begins in the second week of June 2000 and ends in the the third week of December 2000. Deadline for applications is 29 February 2000.

Faculty Welcome

The Industrial Systems Engineering Program is pleased to welcome three Visiting Faculty Members: Prof. G. Belforte, Prof. H. Maier, and Dr. E. Fozzy Moritz. The three joined the Program in the January 2000 term.

Prof. G. Belforte is seconded under a faculty exchange program with Politecnico di Torino, Italy, where he is currently an Associate Professor of Automatic Control.

We are proud to announce that Professor Prinya Nutalaya of the School of Civil Engineering was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Geology) from Chiangmai University. Prof. Prinya was cited for his outstanding service to Chiangmai University and his contribution to educational and professional development activities in geology in Thailand.

Prof. Young-Shik Chung, a Korean national, was appointed as Visiting Faculty in the Structural Engineering and Construction Program on 5 January 2000, for a period of four months. He will support SCE faculty in teaching and in the supervision of student research in the structural engineering and construction areas.

Urban Road Safety Training Course

The Asian Center for Transportation Studies (ACTS), in collaboration with CUC UEM, is organizing a training course, 'Urban Road Safety', to be held on 15-17 February, Room B202 at theAIT Center. The three-day training course focuses on urban road safety and management problems.

Opening of Institute-wide GIS/RS laboratory

The Institute-wide GIS/RS laboratory was officially opened on 3 February by Prof. Mario Tabucanon, Provost. Joining Prof. Tabucanon in addressing the ceremony were Prof. Phien, SAT Dean; Dr. Koji Takewaka, Japanese Faculty Representative; and Dr. Honda Kiyoshi, STAR Program Coordinator.

OMIS Media Unit receives 1999 Sony/ICD Prize

Khun Somchai Desawasdi Media Technician and Khun Somsak Umsuriya, Media Supervisor of the Office of the Media and Services Unit (OMIS), recently received an award certificate and prize for the Media Unit's video entry to the Sony/ICD Video Contest.
