UNEP and Google hunt for plastic pollution with machine learning supported by AIT

Bangkok, 20 April 2021 – The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) announced that it is working to fight plastic pollution using citizen science and machine learning, with technical advisory support from Google. With Google’s support, UNEP will create a new machine learning model that reveals a more detailed and accurate view of plastic pollution in the Mekong River.

AIT and UNESCAP take partnership to new level with MOU

April 7, 2021 -- With recovery from COVID-19 pandemic and sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region high on the agenda, the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) joined forces on April 7 as they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their cooperation in the service of developing countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

AIT – Colorado State University, USA partner for Int’l Dual Degree Master’s Programs in Engineering

A new agreement established with America’s Colorado State University (CSU) – AIT’s oldest and most impactful international university partner – will enable the launch of specialized collaborative degree programs in engineering for the coming Fall Semester 2021.

CSU’s Walter Scott Jr. College of Engineering and the AIT School of Engineering and Technology signed an International Memorandum of Understanding on March 3 to offer Dual Degree Master’s programs in Civil Engineering with a focus on Water Engineering and Management and Geotechnical and Earth Resources Engineering.

The stakes for recycling just got higher as Lucky Trash, Indorama Ventures and AIT launched the first university recycling program ‘Recycle and Win Gold’ to incentivize waste management – with chances of winning real gold!

With studies indicating that each year Thai people spend up to 8.3 billion US Dollars on lottery (!), CEO and co-founder of Trash Lucky, a start-up with a mission to clean up waste from the environment, Mr. Nattapak Atichartakarn, thought it would be more effective to gamify recycling efforts.

What Water’s Worth

March 22, 2021 -- The true value of water is the topic for exchange of views on the World Water Day, held every year on March 22nd since 1993. This year, it was jointly organized by AIT, UNESCO and Chulalongkorn University to raise awareness on the importance of freshwater and it’s sustainable management with the launch of several initiatives and products to further Sustainable Development Goal 6: Water and Sanitation for All by 2030.

With 2.2 billion people still lacking access to safe water today, it is estimated that if no action is taken now to ensure water security and access for all, by 2030, 40% of the water demand will not be met.

Since January of 2020, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis has spread across the world.  The situation in Thailand was very stable for several months in Summer and Fall, but a new outbreak started in late December, 2020.  It is now being managed satisfactorily.
