First Tsunami Science and Preparedness Certificate Program in Asia

The first Tsunami Science and Preparedness (TSP) Certificate Program in Asia will be jointly organized by AIT and University of Washington (UW), USA, with the support from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID-Asia) in Bangkok from 10-26 March 2008. The program is offered as part of AIT’s new post-graduate study program on Disaster Preparedness, Mitigation and Management.

His Majesty the King of Thailand conveys his continued interest and support for AIT and its work

His Majesty King Bhumibol of Thailand conveyed through Her Royal Highness Maha Chakri Sirindhorn his continued interest and support for AIT and its work. HRH Princess Sirindhorn revealed this during the luncheon which AIT hosted in honour of HRH Princess Sirindhorn after the AIT’s 108th Graduation on 21 December 2007.

Her Royal Highness also made a personal contribution of 1 million Baht towards scholarships for needy students to pursue their studies at AIT. Her Royal Highness had very fond memories and recollections of the time she spent at AIT in 1984, when she attended a two-month course at the Asian Regional Remote Sensing Training Center.

HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn confers H.E. Mr. Anand Panyarachun, former Prime Minister of Thailand, with Honorary Doctorate Degree at AIT’s 108th Graduation Ceremony

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on 21 December 2007 conferred H.E. Mr. Anand Panyarachun, former Prime Minister of Thailand, the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (honoris causa) at the Asian Institute of Technology’s (AIT) 108th Graduation Ceremony.

International Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering Ground Improvement and Geosynthetics for Human Security and Environmental Preservation

On 6 December 2007, AIT President Said Irandoust attended the "International Symposium on Geotechnical Engineering Ground Improvement and Geosynthetics for Human Security and Environmental Preservation". The event was organized by AIT's Asian Center for Soil Improvement and Geosynthetics (ACSIG), School of Engineering and Technology (SET) and its partners, which include: the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS), Thailand Chapter; Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society (SEAGS); King Mongkut's University of Technology (KMUTT); and the Department of Environmental Quality and Promotion in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE), Thailand.

Partnership Agreement with Islamic University of Indonesia

On 6 December 2007, AIT signed an MoU with Islamic University of Indonesia (UII), Yogyakarta UII, which will further strengthen the cooperation between AIT and UII through joint academic, research, training, advisory, and consultancy activities. Under this MoU, AIT-UII will carry out joint education programs and research covering all relevant disciplines in AIT and UII. Priority areas are UII staff development, dual degree program, faculty / staff exchange and joint research.
