Students from 23 Countries Make AIT their New Home

Students from 23 countries joined the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) as the campus reopened for the January 2019 semester, with the new batch including a significant number who arrived as exchange students.

Incoming students hail from Europe (France, Germany, and Hungary), Africa (Nigeria), and Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, People’s Republic of China, Thailand, Taiwan, and Viet Nam).

The diverse range of students is reflective of AIT’s international orientation and partnerships.

Royal Audience for President Woon

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn granted a royal audience to AIT President Dr. Eden Y Woon at the Sra Pathum Palace on 22 December 2018. President Woon informed the Princess about his assumption of responsibilities as the ninth president of AIT and his vision for the Institute going forward.

Dr. Teerapat Sanguankotchakorn Appointed Member of Board of Governors of ThaiPBS

Dr. Teerapat Sanguankotchakorn has been appointed as a Member, Board of Governors of Thai Public Broadcasting Service (ThaiPBS).

A faculty member in the Department of Information and Communication Technology, at AIT’s School of Engineering and Technology, Dr. Teerapat’s announcement was officially announced in the Thai Royal Gazette on 13 December 2018.

Established in 2008, The Thai Public Broadcasting Service, popularly known as Thai PBS was Thailand’s first public TV broadcaster.

AIT Hosts International Cricket Matches for ICC

The cricket grounds at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) once again hosted an international cricket tournament with six teams playing seven matches under the Under-19 Cricket World Cup tournament organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

From 7-17 December 2018, the lush AIT cricket grounds hosted teams from Bhutan, Hong Kong, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand, reaffirming the status of AIT as a top venue for ICC matches in Thailand.

292 Students From 21 Countries Honoured in AIT’s 130th Graduation Ceremony

Two-hundred and ninety-two students from 21 countries were awarded degrees and diplomas on the successful completion of their academic programs. The latest batch of graduates included students from Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and North America.

Congratulating the successful students, AIT President Dr. Eden Y. Woon reminisced about his own student days, stating that his graduation days were some of the happiest moments of his life.

AIT Joins Hands with UNESCO to Beat Plastic Pollution on World Science Day

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has joined hands with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to commemorate World Science Day for Peace and Development 2018. Special talks on Beating Plastic Pollution and a host of other activities marked the event organized at AIT on November 13, 2018.

Welcoming participants on behalf of AIT, Dr. Jonathan Shaw, Executive Director, AIT Extension, stated that while the problem is systemic, AIT must play a role in leading behavioural change.

Boosting yields, raising incomes, and offering climate-smart solutions: System of Rice Intensification paves the way for farmers to emerge as more successful “agripreneurs”

Farmers from eleven mostly rainfed provinces of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam have reported higher yields and profits from paddy grown with System of Rice Intensification (SRI) management practices.

In comparison with pre-project baseline performance, SRI practices helped improve livelihoods across the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB) by increasing average rice yields by 52%, farmers’ net economic return per hectare by 70%, labour use efficiency by 64%, and water productivity by 59%. Total energy inputs required for farming operations decreased by 34%, along with significant net reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

24 companies participate in AIT Career Fair

Twenty-four companies participated in the biannual Career Fair and Research Exhibition organized by the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on 31 October 2018.

Welcoming the participants AIT President Dr. Eden Y Woon stated that AIT is focussing on strengthening its relationship with enterprises, industry and the business sector.

GIC develops Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami Resource

A new web-based GIS platform of the Earthquake and Tsunami in Indonesia has been created by AIT’s GeoInformatics Center (GIC). The portal ( http://arcg.is/15uObi) provides satellite data and analytics, an assessment of damages to buildings and infrastructure, along with field data.
