Farewell Party for AIT Retirees

During this Christmas and New Year break, some AITians might be temporarily leaving AIT to their hometowns, their home countries or even travel around. In the same way, another 11 members of AIT Community have to leave AIT, but for good, as they retire from the Institute at the end of this year.

On December 11, 2002, Dong Sheng Cai, Tsukuba University; Mr. Kazuo Hara, Director, Satellite Communication, KDDI; and Mr. Sotaro Ito, Director, NASDA'S Bangkok Office Visited AIT.

During the visit a technical presentation and discussion on the Distance Education NASDA i-Space project under the collaboration of Tsukuba University, Multimedia University of Malaysia and AIT, was held in Room 210, TC Bldg.

Mr. Chretien received his B.A. (Social Sciences) and M.A. (Economics) from Sorbonne University, Paris, France.

Nobel Laureate Amartya Kumar Sen lectures on 'Empowerment and Poverty'

The Asian Institute of Technology on December 11, hosted a reception for a distinguisted guest, Professor Amartya Kumar Sen, Nobel Laureate in Economics. After the reception, Professor Sen gave a special lecture titled 'Empowerment and Poverty' to more than 600 participants who were interested in his work.

On December 02, 2002 Madam Béton-Delegue, Director of Sientific, Academic and Research Cooperation at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs visited the Institute to review the existing French collaboration at AIT and discuss future opportunities of cooperation.

GMSARN Council of Advisors holds its fifth meeting

GMSARN Council of Advisors holds its fifth meeting

The Council of Advisors (CoA) of the Greater Mekong Sub-region Academic and Research Network (GMSARN) held its Fifth Meeting on November 29, 2002 at AIT. Among the issues discussed were GMSARN activities next year, including the Digital GMS Regional Conference, to be held on February 26-28, 2003 and the Environmental Workshop on the GMS Capacity Building, to
be held on April 3-4, 2003.

The Council welcomed Dr. Chumnarn Pongsri, the latest member of the Council representing the Mekong River Commission.

Mr. Nguyen Quang
(HSP989670), a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Urban Environmental Management Field of Study, Urban Environmental Engineering and Management Program, School of Environment, Resources and Development, will have his final examination on Wednesday, December 11, 5:00 in Room E212 (UEM Workshop Room).

His dissertation is entitled: 'Changes in the Political Economy of Vietnam and their Impacts in the Built Environment: Case Study of Hanoi City.

Visiting AIT

Wednesday, November 20, 2002: At 2.50 p.m. H.E. Maneul Lee, Deputy Minister of Environment, Republic of Korea visited AIT and was accompanied by Mr. Kyu-Seok Baek, General Director of International Affairs, Mr. Min-Ho Lee, Deputy Director of International Affairs and Ms. Hyun-Sook Sung, Interpreter.

Financial Transactions

The current financial year will end on December 31, 2002. In order to record the financial transaction this year, all bills, invoices and internal charges must reach the Finance Department by Friday, December 20, 2002. Documents arriving after the deadline will be regarded in the next financial year.
