The AIT Gazette is being presented to the AIT community as a mean to maintain and enhance communication between us. Its main purpose is to allow all AIT constituencies to share full and accurate information regarding the conduct of affairs, and particularly the on-going reform process.
WELCOME NEW FACULTY
The School of Environment, Resources and Development and the Urban Environmental Engineering and Management Program are pleased to welcome Prof. MORRIS MENNELL and Mr. MARC JANSEN as Visiting Faculty Members in the May 2000 term.
Help to SMEs
We must overcome information gap and help SMEs, says Prof. Chongrak, SERD Dean
SMEs lag far behind in environmental management skills, yet they make up the sector
most likely to use production processes harmful to the environment.
It is vital that SMEs adopt cleaner manufacturing techniques, not only to prevent pollution but
also to enjoy greater success in overseas markets, such as the US, Europe and Australia, where
much importance is placed on the ISO certification of exporters.
AIT to boost collaboration with Viet Nam
AIT signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Education
and Training (MoET) of SR Vietnam to undertake an extensive co-operation
programme aimed at building the capacity of Vietnamese scientists.
Zayed International Prize for the Environment
The President of the United Arab Emirates has a personal dedication to environmental issues and invests heavily in environmental concerns. In honour of his work, an environmental prize has been established in his name: the Zayed International Prize for the Environment (UNEP HQ was involved in its establishment). The prize, worth 1 million US dollars, is awarded once every two years.
Japanese Classes (May 2000 Term)
All are invited to attend Japanese Basic II classes that will start on 12 June and will meet every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, at 12 noon to 1 p.m. in Rm. 228 CLET. The instructors will be Mrs. Iida, Mrs. Izumi, Mrs.
Fiscal Year End
The AIT fiscal year ends on the last day of June. All bills and internal charges, etc.to be recorded in the current fiscal year MUST reach the Finance Department not later than Friday, June 16, 2000. Any documents arriving after the deadline will be recorded in the next fiscal year.

Visiting AIT
Ms. Kyoko Nakano, Coordinator for the Asian Youth Fellowship Program, will be visiting AIT on Thursday, 1 June at 3-4 p.m.. She is scheduled to meet with interested students to give a brief talk on the Asian Youth Fellowship Program and to answer specific questions.
Collaboration with Sophia Antipolis-based management school
The School of Management (SOM) last week signed a cooperation agreement
with CERAM, one of Europe's leading schools of management. CERAM (which
stands for Chambre de Commerce et d' Industrie) is based at Sophia
Antipolis in Nice, France.
