Dr. Kiyoshi Honda, Coordinator of the Space Applications and Research
Program (STAR), would like to thank his STAR colleagues together with Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut, Director of the Distributed Education (DEC);
Dr. Charoon Chirapaisarnkul, Director of the Regional Computer Center (RCC); Dr. Agus Harianto, Computer Specialist of RCC;
Mr. Olivier Nicole, Research Specialist of the Computer Science and Information Management Program, School of Advanced Technologies, for their support in holding the Earth Observation Workshop, held on 11 and 12 August at the AIT auditorium
and organized by CEOS (the Comittee on Earth Observation Satellites). Some
172 participants attended (109 from Thailand, 27 from North America, 25
from the USA, 15 from Europe and 21 from Asia (with 11 coming from Japan).

Earth Observation Activity Applications and Network Data and Information
Exchange Systems were demonstrated.

Wanted: Desk Officer for UMP-AIT Core Group

The UNCHS/Urban Management Programme (UMP)-AIT Core Group is urgently seeking
a Desk Officer who will assist in various outreach activities such as city
consultations and action programs in the region. The Desk Officer will
coordinate the activities engaged in by the concerned FoS (Urban Environmental
Management and Gender and Development Studies) within UMP-AIT, as well
as act as the day-to-day contact person for such activities and other related
concerns.

Welcome to SERD faculty
The School of Environment, Resources and Development (SERD) welcomes Dr. Michael Albert Zoebisch and Prof. Dr. Shinichi Okamoto who joined the SERD faculty on 1 September 2000.

Dr. Zoebisch, who is seconded by Danida, joined the Agricultural and Aquatic Systems and Engineering (AASE) Program as an Associate Professor in the Agricultural Systems field of study.

AIT to collaborate with the Open University of Sri Lanka

A Memorandum of Understanding signed with AIT will enable selected faculty from the Open University of Sri Lanka to attend the Institute's Master's or 'split' Ph.D. programs. Funding will be provided by the Asian Development Bank through its Science and Technology Personnel Development Project for Sri Lankan Universities/Research Institutions.

Presentation of French Scholarship Certificates

H.E. Mr. Christian Prettre, the French Ambassador to Thailand, presided over the presentation of 69 French scholarship certificates on 8 September. Sixty of the scholarships will support students in the School of Management, two for Doctoral students in the School of Civil Engineering, five Master's scholarships and 1 Doctoral scholarship for the School of Environment, Resources and Development and one Master's scholarship for the School of Advanced Technologies.
