ED78.14  Membrane Technology in Water and Wastewater Treatment

The overall objective of this course is to impart fundamental knowledge and understanding of membrane based advance water and wastewater treatment systems. The course will teach the fundamentals of the principles and applications of membrane technology in solving environmental problems related to water and wastewater treatment, reuse and management. The theoretical studies on design, flux, fouling interaction and applications of microfiltration, ultrafiltration, membrane bioreactor, reverse osmosis, membrane distillation and forward osmosis for water and wastewater treatment will be predominant. ED78.16  Applied Microbiology and Laboratory

The course is designed to prepare students theoretically and practically to understand microbial processes which underpin with a view to demonstrating that both environmental engineers and managers would greatly benefit from detailed knowledge of taxonomy of microorganisms (bacteria, microalgae, fungi, protozoa, metazoa, and viruses) and biochemistry of the processes these carry out in the natural and human environment. The course aims to demonstrate that environmental qualities in water, soil, air, etc., are, to a great extent, determined by interplay of activities of various microbial groups. Biotechnological approaches, both high tech and low tech, in environmental monitoring of health and food security issues are considered as closely related to global issues of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, and as those for which underlying processes are usually microbiological by nature. Industrial wastes set specific characteristics, as each industry has its specialization sector of operation. Therefore, every industry needs custom waste treatment and management strategies for its sustainable operation. The objective of this course is to prepare both environmental engineers and managers with theoretical and practical skills to characterize, interpret and conduct waste abatement activities in an industrial environment. Discharge of toxic and hazardous chemicals has increased manifolds due to their excessive use which has become a serious threat to human health and the environment. This course exposes the students with the properties of hazardous chemicals, their spread in the environment and risk associated with it. Furthermore, students also learn about hazardous waste minimization and various technologies employed for hazardous waste treatment and disposal, including remediation of hazardous waste contaminated sites. In recent years, anthropogenic activities have led to substantial increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into atmosphere, which has led to climate change. The main objective of this course is to enhance student’s understanding on global GHG emissions and how they are affecting the climate, contribution of waste sector to global GHG emissions and various methods for energy recovery from waste, which can mitigate GHG emission. The objective of this course is to present principles and applications of sustainable consumption and production concepts. Living in the era of consumerism that encourages the purchase of goods and services in ever-greater amounts has led to unsustainable consumption and production patterns, hence leading to the resources scarcity. Therefore, only resource efficient, cleaner and safer production, and sustainable consumption can address broader spectrum of Sustainable Development by responding to basic needs and bring a better quality of life while minimizing the use of natural resources and toxic materials as well as the emissions of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product so as not to jeopardize the needs of future generations.

The course provides an overview of the changing pattern of production and consumption of goods and services, from closing the resource loop by practicing  sustainable resource use and end-of life waste management in a more holistic ways- i.e., considerations from design stage to use/consumption, and the end-of life phase of the product and service, as well as making the entire chain of production, supply chain, and consumption in a more environmentally sustainable and socially and economically responsible ways to influence consumption behavior.
